Explaining Your Teeth Whitening Options

Teeth Whitening Before/After

Teeth whitening is a popular choice for people who want to brighten their smile and get their confidence back. There are several treatments that can restore your teeth to their original pearly white color. Levens Family Dentistry explains the options available to you with this type of cosmetic dentistry.

DIY or “Natural” Teeth Whitening Treatments

There are a few so-called natural or DIY teeth whitening treatments. You may hear about activated charcoal, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, and lemon juice. Dentists do not recognize any of these treatments because medical science indicates just two substances, hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, actually whiten your teeth. If you choose to go with a DIY treatment, which we do NOT recommend, only coconut oil is actually safe for your teeth.

Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening Treatments

There are several over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments available to consumers. Look for ones approved by the American Dental Association. Such products have a seal on the packaging.

  • Teeth whitening strips contain small amounts of peroxide that coat your teeth. Strips are fairly easy to use and are nearly invisible once you put them on.
  • Teeth whitening trays and gels stick to your teeth to achieve results. You may have to wear a clear plastic tray on your teeth for a few hours or overnight.
  • Teeth whitening toothpastes that claim to whiten teeth use abrasives and polishers rather than peroxide. These are not as effective as peroxide-based whiteners.

The main advantage of over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments is that they are low cost. They typically contain the same hydrogen peroxide used in a dentist’s office. However, concentrations of peroxide are less than that of a professional treatment. One study found over-the-counter bleaching took 16 days to achieve the same effect as a one-day dental visit.

In-Office Teeth Whitening at Levens Family Dentistry

A trip to Levens Family Dentistry may cost more than over-the-counter products, but the time it takes to see results is far shorter. Plus, you get the advice of dental professionals who can tell you what to expect and how to care for your pearly whites before, during, and after a teeth whitening appointment.

We routinely perform teeth whitening at Levens Family Dentistry as part of our cosmetic dentistry services. We use professional-strength peroxide to safely and effectively remove stains from your teeth in just a few hours instead of weeks.
